Tenfaye recently welcomed a customer from Hubei, China, to inspect two custom cast steel plum-blossom rolling mill housings. The inspection focused on internal shrinkage defects, surface cracks and dimensional accuracy to ensure compliance with drawing requirements.
Plum-blossom housings have complex openings, uneven wall thicknesses and stress concentration areas. Tenfaye uses CAE casting simulation to optimize gating and riser designs, helping reduce shrinkage and other casting defects.

Magnetic particle testing (MT) checks for surface cracks, while ultrasonic testing (UT) helps detect internal defects. Testing is performed according to the specified acceptance requirements, supporting the quality of heavy-duty rolling mill components.
The symmetry of the plum-shaped openings and key spacing dimensions are checked against engineering drawings. Tenfaye provides integrated casting, heat treatment, machining and inspection to support accurate assembly and reliable operation.

Rolling mill housings withstand substantial rolling forces and repeated mechanical loads. Their casting integrity and dimensional accuracy directly affect equipment stability and service life.
Tenfaye manufactures custom cast steel housings in grades including ZG270-500, ZG310-570, ZG35CrMo and ZG42CrMo. For specialized rolling mill components and other large steel castings, our team welcomes drawing reviews and engineering discussions tailored to project requirements.
1.Why is UT testing important for rolling mill housings?
It helps identify internal defects that may not be visible on the casting surface.
2.What is the difference between UT and MT testing?
UT detects internal discontinuities using ultrasonic waves, while MT identifies surface and near-surface defects in suitable ferromagnetic materials.
3.Can Tenfaye supply machined rolling mill housings?
Yes. Tenfaye offers integrated casting, heat treatment, machining and inspection based on customer drawings.
